Beloved is a symbol of the slavery past.
DO not have attachments to your children, because they do not belong to you. Hence Sethe's possessiveness - she wants to love them, she wants to own them. She kills them because they are hers.
Sethe's need to love her children.
Beloved's control - childlike psyche; she needs her mother's love, craves it to the extent of Sethe's destruction.
